A few years ago, I thought I’d try my hand at building a WordPress website. I decided to look for a YouTube video tutorial to teach me. I ended up finding this awesome guy named Tyler Moore, who has a website, Tyler.com, that has the most comprehensive WordPress tutorials you could ever want. After watching all his videos, I completed my WordPress site. It looked pretty good, and it was actually kind of fun to build, because Tyler made it fun to build.
But I’m what many refer to as a “techie” or a “nerd”, so I had some advanced knowledge of what I was tackling. I build websites for a living, albeit Wix websites, but doing this also requires advanced knowledge (in my opinion).
Building the WordPress site may have been fun for me, but if you bake cookies for a living, and you know cookies, but you don’t know technology, you may not find it as fun. And even though it was fun, I found it difficult. It really challenged me.
I have a “techie” friend who doesn’t understand why I don’t just teach WordPress. It’s not that hard, he says. He’s been a “techie” all his life, and I don’t think he is putting himself in the shoes of somebody who bakes cookies for a living.
This morning I woke up and thought, “I think I’ll read some of my blog posts and make sure they’re still relevant”. Although I found that they all are, I look at my analytics and realize, hey, nobody’s reading my blog posts. What a shame, I think, because there’s a lot of great information in them.
So I have decided to start a website that consists solely of my blog posts. And I figured, what the heck, let’s build it in WordPress. I chose the domain name debwebblog.com. If you want a quicker way to get to my blog, this is the way to go. Mind you, it’s still under construction, but check back often. In the meantime, you can still read all my posts here.
I do have an ulterior motive, though. I want to learn WordPress for a particular reason.
Lately, business owners have been coming to me who already have websites that were built with WordPress who are frustrated. They told me their designer assured them they would teach the business owner how to manage their content, and then never did. Or they set up the account so that the business owner only had very limited access. The business owner was at the mercy of the designer to make changes, often at a steep cost.
I want to help these business owners, who didn’t realize what they were getting themselves into when they hired their designer. In the past, I took the content from their current WordPress website and converted it into a Wix site. But this process is very time and labor intensive and isn’t always to most efficient use of the client’s money.
I want to know enough about WordPress to teach my clients how to manage their content, even in WordPress, if that is their only option. I don’t think I’ll ever stop using Wix or start building WordPress websites for a living (because let’s face it, almost all other designers do that, and I think using Wix is what sets me apart from them).
I recently posted a blog post about how I can help you even if you already have a website. I’d like to take that one step further and say I can give you enough knowledge to make changes to your site, and to offer a WordPress maintenance plan that will be a better deal than what you are getting with your current designer. This will not be easy, which is why it is certainly not my first choice of ways to do things, but I want to do what’s best for my clients. I want to save them as much money as possible.
